UFC 79 Results..

UFC 79: Nemesis

Saturday, December 29th, 2007
At Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas Nevada.

LAS VEGAS It took seven years to get Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva together. Turns out it was well worth the wait.

In one of the most heated atmospheres in the history of mixed martial arts, Liddell and Silva went toe-to-toe in a 15-minute slugfest at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Saturday night. Liddell, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, ended a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision win. The scores were 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.

While Liddell is mainly known as a counter fighter, he took it to Silva in the first round, initiating the bulk of the action and controlling the octagon. The entire first round stayed standing.

Silva came out on fire in the second round, getting the better of the standup and bringing out the noise from his supporters in the crowd. Silva managed to rock Liddell several times, dropping him to the mat at one point. Liddell rallied late, scored a takedown, and had position on the top as the round ended.

Liddell surprised everyone with a takedown to open the third. Silva got up, but Liddell continued to dictate the action, rocking Silva along the fence and nearly putting him away midway through the round. Silva was clearly gassing at the end of the round, and Liddell ended any chances of a Silva home run finish by taking him down again with about 20 seconds left.

Though The Iceman usually downplays the importance of his individual fights, he acknowledged this match was something special. Yeah, I knew it was a big fight for everyone, he said.It was nice to get back on track. I want to get my title back.

The loss was the third straight for former PRIDE middleweight champion Silva.

Couture, St. Pierre Dominate at UFC 74..

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture retained his heavyweight title in a one-sided bout over highly regarded challenger Gabriel Gonzaga Saturday at UFC 74.

Couture completely dominated Gonzaga, opening a large cut on Gonzaga's nose and pounding him into submission. Referee Herb Dean stopped it at 1:37 of the third round at Mandalay Bay.

In the co-main event Georges St. Pierre  manhandled one of the game's best wrestlers, Josh Koscheck, winning a unanimous decision in a title elimination bout at UFC 74 at Mandalay Bay.
The win should set up St. Pierre to face the winner of the December fight between Serra and Matt Hughes.

In each of the three rounds, St. Pierre was able to take the fight to the ground in an advantageous position.
Only in the first round was Koscheck able to reverse the action. The maneuver helped him capture the first round on two scorecards, but those were the only blemishes he could put on St. Pierre.

Bonanza High School graduate Frank Mir continued his comeback from a serious motorcycle accident with a quick submission victory over Antoni Hardonk. Mir, the former UFC heavyweight champion, has struggled in his last few bouts but looked like his old self.
Always a talented submission artist, Mir got Hardonk to the ground in the opening seconds and worked the armbar deeper and deeper until Hardonk tapped just 1:17 into the opening round.
Mir attempted to reassure the fans that his injuries are behind him.
"It's over with; it's in the past. I can fight now," Mir said triumphantly to a thunderous ovation from the hometown fans.
Mir's biggest problem recently has been a lack of conditioning, but he looked to be in much better shape and his stamina was not tested with the quick stoppage.

Las Vegan Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta each picked up pivotal wins in lightweight division battles.
The two hope to be in line for a title that might soon be vacated if champion Sean Sherk is unsuccessful in his appeal to the California Athletic Commission after a positive steroids test in July.

Thales Leites, Patrick Cote, Clay Guida and "Babalu" Sobral also picked up victories.
