Little League

Well Little League season has started and this year will be a little different. Monica has been after me for years to coach one of Mack's teams. I have always been willing to help out, keep the scorebook help with practice drills, what ever has been needed. Several times I have been asked to be a coach and have passed.   I love the kids, love baseball and love working with them. But the parents that is another thing all together.

The reason I have always been so hesitate to coach goes back a while. When I was a senior in high school I used to drive my youngest brother Chris to his baseball practices. The coach of the team ask me if I would not mind helping out at practices. Before the first game he gave me a team hat and ask me to be the Asst. Coach. We won that first game, it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot. But things changed, the Coach did not show up for the second game in fact he did not come to any games all year, his car blew up so guess who was the new Head Coach. We had a great season with only one loss, and we went on to the win the championship, not bad for an 18 year old coach. But I had to ban three different fathers from coming to games because they were so hard on their kids, or thought it was okay to argue with the umpire.

Later as a parent just helping out I always could just walk away when things got out of hand. But the coaches don't have that luxury. They have to deal with the over zealous Mom or Dad at the same time keep the kids on the right track to being a good sportsman.

Well this year I not sure how it happened but I am the Assistant Coach. Things are a lot different then when I played Rec. ball or coached my brother. When I played kids didn't cry when they messed up or struck out. And I don't remember ever arguing with an umpire ever, you may not have liked the call but you just shook it off and moved on. Well I am going to do my best if the boys learn anything this year it will be sportsmanship.   I will try to update on how things go throughout the season.
